What do you need to do if you are wanting to enter the program with a related Bachelor's degree from another college?

Does ISU have an interviewing process to screen perspective students? If so, when are those interviews conducted and how would I be contacted?

I would like to become an RD. Do I have to do a Masters program or can I just do an internship and then take the RD exam?

Western has a bach program and I was thinking of transferring to Ilinois State for the internship. Would my chances of being accepted to Illinois State internship program be better if I went there for my BS degree?

ISU does not have a formal interview process. However, I believe that most of the students accepted into the program had an informal interview with Julie - more like a meeting just to talk about the internship and get a feel for the campus.

In order to become an RD, the current requirement is a bachelors related to nutrition and an accredited internship, followed by successful completion of the RD exam. A masters is not required at this time, however, the ADA will likely require a MS in the near future.

How are you able to pay for living, since there seems like no time for a part time job?

ISU accepts all applications and considers equally everyone that does apply. Students who complete their undergraduate degree at ISU apply to the internship through the same process as all other students accross the country, and therefore do not have an unequal advantage.

Many interns currently hold part-time jobs while also completing the internship program at ISU.

The amount you work, or if you decide to work at all, is completely individual.

The best opportunity to work, is during the first year of the internship program, when you are completing your coursework. At this time you have more flexiability with the time between classes. Throughout the second year of the program however, you will be completing rotations, which are 32 hours a week.

Keep in mind that tuition is waived your first year, and that you will recieve a monthly stipend as a graduate assistant. There are also several breaks throughout the two years of the program that are perfect opportunities to pick up extra work hours.

"Completion of a minimum of 150 hours of paid or volunteer work experience in food service and/or nutrition care is preferred."

What are some examples of jobs that would satisfy this requirement?

Food service and nutrition care jobs can include several different areas. Often, students seem to have the most experience in restaurant kitchens, or healthcare facility kitchens (such as nursing home or hospitals).
Be sure to include any employment or volunteer experience that you see falling into these categories. Don't be shy!

Many schools require you to apply to the internship and graduate school separately. Is this true of Illinois State?

What are the advantages (if any) of doing the thesis option over the 10 hours of additional coursework?

I'm wondering about the new emphasis of the program (leadership and management project concentration), and how much this will change the current program.

Great Question--the program intends to keep the same experiences in foodservice, community, and clinical. The emphasis comes with planning and implimenting National Nutrition Month activities.
